Medication Management Q&A

What is medication management?

Medication management includes getting psychiatric medication and going to regular follow-up appointments. Routine appointments allow Dr. Blount to monitor your results, protect your health and well-being while taking medications, and order blood work if needed to watch for side effects.

Why do I need medication management?

Medication management ensures you get the medication and dose needed to relieve your symptoms and achieve the best results.

Finding the right medication often takes some trial and error because there are numerous medications, and everyone metabolizes each drug differently. If your first medication doesn’t help, Dr. Blount may prescribe another that targets the same problem but works differently in your body.

The second goal of medication management is protecting your health. Dr. Blount monitors for signs of side effects and makes changes in your prescription when needed to prevent problems.

When might I need medication management?

Psychiatric medications have the potential to substantially improve your mental health symptoms. Dr. Blount may recommend medication for people diagnosed with:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Panic disorder
  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Dr. Blount typically provides therapy alongside medications, an approach that achieves the best results. While medications improve your symptoms, therapy helps you change negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and teaches new skills for achieving a fulfilling life.

What happens during medication management?

Your first medication management appointment includes a psychiatric assessment (if Dr. Blount hasn’t already done an evaluation). He also reviews your medical and mental health history and learns about all the medications you use for any health condition.

If you’re a good candidate for medication, Dr. Blount discusses the type, how to take it, and possible side effects. Armed with this information, you decide if you want to take the medication. If you do, he sends the prescription to your pharmacy and schedules your follow-up appointment.

Follow-up appointments don’t take as long. Dr. Blount asks about signs of side effects and whether or not your mental health symptoms have improved. Depending on your results, he may keep you on the same prescription, adjust your dose, or prescribe a different medication.
